Posted on May 19th, 2018

The Kaiser Foundation for Social Development (KFSD) formalized its partnership with the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on May 17th 2018, at a signing ceremony which was held at the Senate House of the University of Lagos. This partnership is geared towards providing well-rounded education for students studying construction-related degree courses at tertiary level.

The Vice Chancellor University of Lagos, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe expressed his delight over the partnership reiterating the benefits to the University and the construction industry stating that the partnership will improve the visibility of both organizations.

Engr. Igbuan Okaisabor, in his response emphasized the need to develop capacity in the construction industry and groom a new breed of excellent constupreneurs. He made mention of the fact that a good number of graduates are unemployable and lack soft skills that will make them thrive in the industry. He also announced that Construction Kaiser Limited will be marking her 25th anniversary this year.

The KFSD-UNILAG collaboration aims at fostering growth and competitiveness in the Nigerian construction industry value chain. The objective  is to promote an overall economic and developmental growth of Nigeria through the following initiatives:

Scholarships: KFSD shall offer full need-based scholarships to deserving alumni of their Teenage STEM Summer Construction program; who have been admitted to the University of Lagos but are unable to afford tuition. The scholarship will cover tuition, books and living expenses for the period of their construction-related course of study.

Internships: KFSD shall enlist the Alumni and other qualifying students of the University of Lagos who are engaged in construction-related courses into its sister companies for their mandatory industrial attachment. This shall be based on agreed criteria. They would acquire hands-on training on their project sites, with emphasis on safety and quality.

Undergraduate Training:  KFSD shall facilitate trainings for interested UNILAG students studying Construction-related courses on soft skills such as: project management skills, leadership skills, interpersonal skills, team building skills, communication skills, presentation skills, writing (technical and non-technical) skills, etc. This would help them get ready for the workplace on graduation, and make them more employable.

Research Collaboration Scheme: KFSD shall also provide funding to the UNILAG’s Construction Industry Development Research Group (“CIDG”), for research aimed at tackling competiveness, sustainability, growth, performance and inclusion among construction industry stakeholders who operate in the formal and informal economy.

Kaiser Foundation for Social Development (KFSD) is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) setup in 2016 as part of Kaiser Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. KFSD was formed to address the fast decline in human capacity development with the aim of tackling key issues which include unemployment, underemployment, lack of entrepreneurial skills, limited apprenticeship, vocational training and skills acquisition programs in the construction industry. KFSD also addresses the need for technical ‘on the job’ training and leadership skills especially in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and its related fields. It addresses, also, the lack of sustained third party partnerships with similar goals.

Founded in 1962, the University of Lagos has provided qualitative and research-oriented education to Nigerians and all who have entered its domain in search of knowledge. The University has built a legacy of excellence and has been instrumental in the production of top professionals in the Nigerian construction industry.
